सन १८५७ के संग्राम के पश्चात देश में साहित्य , संस्कृति शिक्षा विधान एवं कला कौशल के क्षेत्र में आगे बढ़ने के लिए नव जागरण हुआ। हमारे पूर्वज भी पीछे नहीं रहे। जातीय चेतना जागृत करने का प्रथम श्रेय इटावा के चौबे जगन्नाथ जी (१८२०-१९०२) को है। वे मैनपुरी के जिला स्कूल में संस्कृत के अध्यापक नियुक्त हुए। वहां उन्होंने दम्मी लाल मिश्र (१८५६-१९०२) के सहयोग से जातीय सुधार लाने के उद्देश्य से सन १८७३ में बैठक आरम्भ की।
